10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop
8. Caught By the Fuzz - Supergrass
What often gets forgotten in the story of Britpop is how eclectic some of its influences were from every band. While it's easy to just call it a tribute to the early days of British rock, you also had bands pulling from different dance textures as well as some full on indie rock in some spots. Or in the case of Supergrass, we got a nice helping of punk rock on Caught By the Fuzz.
Although most of the praise for the band's first album goes to the poppy single Alright, this is more indicative of what they were used to sounding like, taking the tuneful sound that Britpop was known and adding an extra layer of adrenaline into the mix. Whereas Oasis may have earned their millions donning parkas everywhere they went, this is the song that's meant to be listened to on a hot summer's day and blasting at maximum volume as you roll through the country side.
That's not where Supergrass were intended to stay for too much longer though. If you listen back to I Should Coco, you can see them already progressing into a much different band that what they were originally, getting a lot more sophisticated and making for songs that seem to be more in line with the traditional Beatles flavor of pop rock. Both genres of music work great for their sound, but they had never sounded hungrier than on this slice of nasty rock and roll.
