10 Amazing Songs That Will Make You Love Britpop

4. Common People - Pulp

It's hard to really make a song that races up the charts and still balance your relationship with your audience. In between the millions of people that you play to around the world, there's only a little sweet spot when you're on the same level as your audience. And when you have that subtle connection, you need to cherish it like Jarvis Cocker did when he talked to the Common People.

Being inspired by a meet up that he had with a girl who had supposedly come from Greece, this is the kind of sendoff to all of the tourists that come through Britain that are more into the aesthetic of what Britain is like rather than actually helping the people who are living on the rougher side of the streets. You can practically hear Jarvis getting more and more fed up in real time as well, with the tempo of the song gradually speeding up as the song goes on.

Out of all the songs to come out of the Britpop movement, this still feels the most down to Earth, taking the pastiches of people like Bowie from days gone by and tying it to a track that's all about what it's like to be a fan of this music. Once the Britpop movement reached the ceiling, it felt like a lot of bands were talking down to you. Right here though, Jarvis was speaking for you, and he was damn proud to be a member of the working class.
