10 Amazing Stories Behind Famous Rock Album Music Covers
6. A Thousand Yard Stare (Performance And Cocktails - Stereophonics)
They're not everybody's favourite, but Welsh rockers Stereophonics are one of the most successful guitar bands in British history.
Eight of their 12 studio albums have reached the top spot in the UK charts, although none of this success has ever translated across the pond. Still, they're probably very content with their millions of pounds and high social status over in Blighty.
The first Stereophonics record to go to number one was 1999's Performance and Cocktails, which also spawned three top five singles. As well as a memorable tracklist, the album also came with an unforgettable image of a man kissing a woman who appeared to anywhere but on planet Earth.
This picture was taken by Scarlett Page, daughter of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy, the previous year at a London football pitch, The woman, later revealed to be a 27-year-old named Lucy Joplin, who attributed her faraway glance to the ingestion of absinthe and opium earlier that day.
Both Lucy and her male counterpart were paid for the picture, this wasn't something dodgy.
So there you have it, Stereophonics have football, Jimmy Page, and illegal drugs to thank for at least some of their early success.
