Setting aside for just a moment that "hollaback girl" is a bafflingly meaningless phrase, can we talk about all of the terrible things that had to happen in order for this song to make it to the airwaves? No Doubt went on an indefinite hiatus, Gwen's collaboration with Eve ("Let Me Blow Ya Mind") won a Grammy and validated her belief that she could rap by association, and a tabloid feud between another dated 90s rock star (Courtney Love) was turned into an actual pop song. But okay, now let's get back to the title. Do you know what a hollaback girl is? Because I know someone who probably doesn't, and her name rhymes with Shmen Shmefani. All of this makes me very angry at the fact that I've found myself involuntarily humming the opening melody to this song in the shower multiple times, even when I'm not picturing Gwen Stefani on a nude beach.
