5. Carly Rae Jaepsen - "I Really Like You"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV5lzRHrGeg I'm going to give her a break on "Call Me Maybe," if only because it's been off the Play Incessantly category of radio stations long enough to appreciate the genuine craftsmanship of that chorus. It may have been created using a complex mathematical equation where x equals "airplay gold," but you have to applaud that hook. That's a really, really good hook. Her second solo hit, on the other hand...that crap was designed using two buttons on the calculator. Here's how that songwriting session probably went down:
All right, hit me with that lyrical bliss. "I like you." No, that's...that's insanely generic. What are you doing? "I really like you?" Hmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Yes, interesting. I can see something start to form here. "I really, really, really...really...really..." Stop! You're a goddamn genius! Send it off to radio immediately!
But holy hell does it make it easier to listen to when you have Tom Hanks lip synching the words and dancing in the snow like a total weirdo.
