5. Alex Cameron - Oxy Music
It's been just over three years since the snake-hipped Alex Cameron dropped his acclaimed third album Miami Memory. It was a departure from his usual ventures into song writing. Previously, Cameron has embodied a number of fictionalised characters, exploring topics from porn addiction, to misogyny and online romance. His follow up was more personal, with themes relating to his marriage with actress Jemima Kirke.
Included in a press release, Cameron revealed the new record is a return to his more fictionalised approach to story telling. In part inspired by the opioid epidemic, it will chronicle the struggles of a character searching for meaning in a world of divided confusion.
In November of last year, Cameron released the first new single from Oxy Music. As always, it was equal parts sincere and equal parts ridiculous. The accompanying music video sums up Cameron's approach to music making. Frolicking around in a pair of speedos and dad sandals, he expresses the frustrations of modern life, with references to vaccine paranoia and unrealistic ideas of body image.
From what we've heard so far, Cameron is doubling down on his '80s synth pop sound; the Brian Ferry influences are in sight for all to see, particularly with the album titled; a pun alluding to the drug oxycodone and Ferry's band Roxy Music.
