10 Artists Who Grew Out Of Their Appeal

2. Lena Zavaroni

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG4y6WCY1RA Lena Zavaroni found fame as a singer and TV presenter before even hitting her teenage years. Aged just ten years old when her debut album, Ma (He's Making Eyes At Me) was released, she remains, to this day, the youngest person to have ever had an album in the UK Top 10. As with Garland, Zavaroni's appeal came from her age, natural charisma and gift for singing and performing. After winning 1970s talent show Opportunity Knocks five weeks in a row, performing at the White House and appearing on stage with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Zavaroni seemed destined for international stardom; but as she grew, she found it increasingly difficult to sustain her juvenile image. Under pressure from her management, she would struggle to fit into the childish costumes that a developing teenager simply couldn't wear, and as a result, started suffering with depression and anorexia. Despite continuing to sing, as well as host her own shows throughout the 1970s and early 80s, her popularity began to wane. Her health worsened, and she later dropped out of the public eye altogether. In 1999, Zavaroni underwent neurosurgery as a last resort attempt to relieve her illnesses. She died three weeks later, after developing pneumonia.
