10 Artists That Changed Music Genres (And Everyone Hated It)

6. Generation Swine - Motley Crue

As soon as Nirvana hit the scene in the early '90s, most of the hair metal bands were given their last rites. After the sounds of alternative started to come into frame on MTV, no one was really going to be paying attention to the likes of Poison ever again. Just when it looked like Motley Crue were going to change with the times though, getting Vince Neil back in the band made for one of the strangest records they've ever put out.

Towards the start of the '90s, it actually looked like the Crue were settling into a more hard edged groove, bringing in John Corabi and putting themselves more in line with the sound of bands like Guns N Roses. When the result didn't set the world on fire though, they decided that the new ingredient didn't really work, leading to them riding the trend of dark music on Generation Swine. Taking more than a few cues from industrial rock, the glitchy guitar effects and ambient noise doesn't fit well at all on Motley's sound, almost like hearing the Sunset Strip filtered through a few too many samplers.

If anything, the reunion may have worked a lot better if they just kept their identity as Motley Crue, since the back half of the '90s was about to give way to sunshine-y and happy sounding rock and roll all over again. Motley could have been able to make a decent comeback around that time, but what we ended up getting was a glam metal act that tried on their best Nine Inch Nails impression.
