10 Artists That Destroyed Their Own Album
4. The Black Album - Prince
When hyping up the album process, most artists have their own unique say of how they want to present their record. Either through building up hype through secrecy or making one of the most grandiose rollouts known to man, the goal is to always leave your fans hungry for what you've been up to in the studio. Or if your Prince, just don't bother releasing the damn thing at all like with the Black Album.
During the making of this album, Prince was already settling into a bit of a darker mood, hence the title that we ultimately ended up getting for this one. While we did see the final mix come to fruition in 1994, the Purple One had actually been sitting on this material as far back as the late '80s, having been the original follow up to his mammoth double release Sign O the Times.
Though this still sounds like the songwriting genius that we got to know back in the '80s, Prince ultimately decided that the feel of this music wasn't a proper reflection of where he was at the time, instead shelving this before going into work on his album Lovesexy. Even though it's a shame that fans had to sit in anticipation for this one to see the light of day, maybe it's for the best that we at least got two great Prince records out of the deal.
