10 Artists That Disowned Their Own Songs
3. Girls of Summer - Aerosmith
Looking at what Aerosmith has come to these days feels like a quantum leap from where they originally started. These were supposed to be the Bad Boys From Boston who played the kind of songs that would have made their bluesy inspirations proud back in the day. It was like the Americanized version of the Rolling Stones that we always wanted, but something changed when I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing was launched into the stratosphere.
In the wake of their biggest ballad ever, the next few years would see Aerosmith embracing the sounds of pop, with Just Push Play being the peak of their radio friendly era. Although none of the band members were really onboard with this kind of project in the first place, the line was drawn on the Girls of Summer, which was way too bubblegum for most of them to get involved with.
Although there was still some fire behind the solos on ballads like Crazy, this felt like the label was trying to put them on the same level as Backstreet Boys and Destiny’s Child, and everyone except Steven Tyler flatout refused to be in the video for the song, either using B-roll footage of them live or not showing them at all. So when you look at the kind of evolution that brought us here, you almost can’t call this an Aerosmith song from skin to core. If anything, this was a Steven Tyler solo song released years before he had even started working outside of Aerosmith.
