10 Artists That Disowned Their Own Songs
4. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
There’s a good chance that a song like Stairway to Heaven is probably going to outlive us all. Spanning over 8 minutes, the whole track practically feels like the hero’s journey put to music, with Jimmy Page’s simple acoustic riff turning into one of the greatest anthems that the rock world has ever seen. And while Jimmy is certainly proud of his work, the same can’t be said for some other members of the band.
Ever since Zeppelin broke up, Robert Plant has talked about not really liking the song very much at all, saying that he got tired of it fairly quickly when playing it on the road with Zeppelin. Just because Plant doesn’t like the song doesn’t mean he thinks it’s a bad song though. As Plant talks about writing it, he does admit that it took him almost no time to write the lyrics, almost as if there was something supernatural happening where the words practically wrote themselves.
The craftsmanship is one thing, but Plant has said that he would probably break out in hives if he ever has to sing the song again. Though it’s impossible to ever see a true Zeppelin reunion without John Bonham behind the drum kit, this is probably another reason why Plant is content to just continue on with his solo career. He still has affection for his old band, but he is not going to be climbing that stairway again any time soon.
