10 Artists That Hate Their Own Albums
4. ReLoad - Metallica
Most of Metallica's heavy metal fan base is probably hoping that they can purge the Load era from their catalog. Even though the Black Album was the first sign of fans getting upset of the metal titans' radio appeal, the one two punch of Load and ReLoad made fans really start to question their intentions of trying to remain a metal band. Fans may have been upset at the time, but it only took a few more years for some of the band to feel the same way.
If you go back and listen to interviews that Metallica have given since these records, half the time they seem to refer to it as the 'haircut' album, where the band was given a lot of flak for cutting their hair during this era of the group. Once you've distanced yourself from the experience, you also get to see how tired some of the songs sound, and James Hetfield made no secret about how he was spinning his wheels.
Since the documentary Some Kind of Monster was all about the band opening up to each other about their creative process, James had talked about the ability they used to have for whipping some bad ideas into shape, and pointed to ReLoad specifically as one of the few times they actually did that. For all of its strong moments like Fuel, you can kind of see where he's coming from, with some tracks feeling like blatant rip offs of themselves. There's still some quality material here...you just have to sift through some duds here and there.
