10 Artists That Hate Their Own Albums

3. Their Satanic Majesties Request - The Rolling Stones

There's an old quote from John Lennon where he mentioned how much the Rolling Stones were able to take from the Beatles at the worst of times. Even though the Stones were born and bred in the blues, the songwriting partnership of Lennon and McCartney definitely had an influence on Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who made some of their best stuff almost to compete with their friends from Liverpool. You can only play catch up for so long though, and Mick felt that the band was starting to lose their identity during their psychedelic period.

Though singles from this time like We Love You feature some guest appearances by some of the Beatles, the accompanying album Their Satanic Majesties Request was a bit too much for Mick Jagger to look back on in hindsight, calling most of the songs that they made around this time absolute rubbish. For a band that was known for their rock and roll swagger, you can sort of see where he's coming from, with the album cover itself looking like a blatant copy of what the Beatles had done just a few months before on Sgt. Peppers.

Mick wasn't the only one leaving these sessions with a sour taste either, as string arranger (and soon to be Led Zeppelin bassist) John Paul Jones calling these sessions unprofessional and boring. After something like this, we almost needed the Stones to make Beggars Banquet, if only to show us they still had that bluesy sound in there somewhere.
