10 Artists That Went Too Far For Classic Songs
1. Iowa - Slipknot
One of the big mission statements going into the making of Slipknot's Iowa was not to make the stereotypical follow up album where everything was much more commercial. Going in the exact opposite direction, Iowa may be one of the most intense records to reach the top of the album charts, taking all of the disturbing and borderline disgusting aspects of their debut and amplifying them that much more, with moments that are legitimately terrifying to listen to at some points. Just screaming your guts out isn't enough though, and Corey Taylor was more than willing to go past the point of no return.
Bookending Sid Wilson's scream that opens the album on (515), the title track is one of the most disturbing songs they have ever made, as Corey talks about doing very gross things to a corpse. Only singing the song twice, Corey knew that he needed to embody the song, and decided to strip naked before going onto the studio floor to sing the entire track. That would have been enough, but Corey actually needed to suffer for his art too.
Breaking a bunch of glass that was around him, Corey can be heard actually harming himself with some of the broken glass and eventually vomiting in the studio, after which the rest of the band had to help tend to his wounds. While not all of the band was present for the sessions, Clown was said to be shellshocked, wondering how Corey could be this unhinged. And when you've done something so messed to get a reaction like that out of Clown, you know that you've gotten just the right amount of danger on tape.
