10 Artists That Went Too Far For Classic Songs
2. Blood Sex and Booze - Green Day
Of all of Green Day's post-Dookie records, Warning might be one of the most mellow projects that they've ever made. Though songs like Minority would set them up for the political commentary that they would make just one album later on American Idiot, there's a lot more focus on acoustic guitars this time around, as Billie Joe Armstrong takes a few pages out of the classic rock playbook. When it comes to the song about bondage though, they needed something a little more than just guitars to get their point across.
While the song itself is very much in the same vein as Longview or even Tre Cool's comedic Dominated Love Slave, the bluesy shuffle that kicks everything off didn't really make for the best intro to the song. After trying to find the right way to introduce it, Tre ended up having the perfect idea, calling in a friend that he knew who moonlighted as a dominatrix and getting her to use various whips and chains at the start of the song. Just having a few cracks in the beginning would have been fine, but the band did decide to have a little bit of fun here.
With a little bit of convincing, the band actually had one of the engineers be placed in the center of the studio while the dominatrix proceeded to beat the hell out of him, which made for a much more convincing touch at the start where you can actually hear him wincing in pain as he gets beaten. Green Day definitely have their more juvenile side every now and again, but if they're looking for just the right effect, they aren't necessarily above getting some hands dirty.
