10 Artists That Went Too Far For Classic Songs

8. The Unforgiven - Metallica

One of the main reasons why Metallica went with Bob Rock as producer for the Black Album was about getting a change of scenery. Even though their thrash albums in the '80s had had their own character, things had stretched out a little too much, and Bob's work with The Cult and Bon Jovi was what helped rein them in and write material that was a little more to the point. Bob could crack the whip when he wanted to though, and Kirk Hammett got the brunt of his rage when turning in his solos.

Although Kirk had originally brought in an entire idea of how he wanted the Unforgiven solo to sound, everyone in the band really didn't think it fit with the rest of the track, and his noodling in between takes didn't help matters either. Thinking that Kirk wasn't giving it his all, Bob ended up really winding him up in the studio, saying that every solo that he had played during the session wasn't going to cut it before asking for the "guitar player of the year" solo out of him.

While the dust up seems pretty intense on its own, there was a bit of a method to Bob's madness, as Kirk got more and more upset with his own performance before boiling over and just shredding something for the hell of it. That's the solo that you hear on the record too, taking all of that pent up aggression and channeling it into something that has somewhat of a bluesy attitude to it. Even if this was Metallica's first mainstream album, it was still metal, and all good metal feeds off of rage.
