10 Artists Who HATE Their Own Albums
4. David Bowie - David Bowie
Not everyone knocks it out of the park with their first album. Oftentimes, even some of the best artists have to find their signature sound a few albums into their career. It's one thing to look back and cringe at your early work, but no one hates their first steps as much as David Bowie did.
Released on the same day as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, David Bowie's self-titled first album is a real sore thumb in the catalog of a man destined to be one of rock's great eccentrics. Instead of the more experimental material Bowie would pioneer in later years, much of this album caters more towards lush arrangements and a taste for the baroque side of pop.
While the rest of the man's catalog flirts with the very idea of what rock could be, this is probably one of the only Bowie releases which could be accurately described as "safe."
And to say Bowie hated this is almost an understatement. Just a few years later, Bowie ended up releasing his second album self-titled, as if to reintroduce himself to the world. Even when combing through Bowie's discography, the man himself never really considered this album an integral part of his proper body of work.
More than just hatred, this first outing from Bowie feels like watching one man's quest to nullify his own album from existence.
