10 Artists Who Never Managed To Top Their First Album

6. Boston

A staple of classic rock radio stations nearly 40 years after its release, Boston's self-titled debut album dropped in August of 1976. Coming during a time when disco was ruling the charts, the boys from Beantown proved that guitar-heavy rock records were still appealing to the mainstream. The megahit More Than A Feeling spearheaded what would go on to become the second best-selling US debut (eventually being unseated by Appetite For Destruction). Long Time and Peace Of Mind also charted as singles, with the album peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart. Sales have exceeded over 17 million and led to the rise of the radio-friendly pop rock genre. The group was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist, losing out to the Starland Vocal Band (who?). Interestingly enough, Boston are the only one of the 1977 nominees to have made any real lasting mark in music history. Lead vocalist Brad Delp committed suicide in 2007, putting to rest any chances of the original members creating another landmark album. They've remained active with current singer Tommy DeCarlo (discovered through posting Boston covers on his Myspace page) but there's nothing like the real thing. Despite having the honor of being arguably the most popular of all the bands named after geographic locations, Boston was never able to produce another record on par with this one.
