4. The Bloated Pope
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC1BiMIzvck A ripping song off of Pigs of the Roman Empire, their collaboration with dark-ambient maven Lustmord, The Bloated Pope shows the rhythmic dynamics that Crover and Osbourne are capable of when they get together, tightly locked as a seamless entity. It is brutal without having to be death metal and heavy enough to keep the crowds frenzied. The groove is one of the things that really stands out about this and will burrow deep into your brain. The band has always been a fan of turning traditional song structure on its head, and this does just that lacking a chorus instead having a break with a lull in the guitar frenzy and falls on the bass and drums to carry the section with Crover pulling double duties on vocals. And let's not forget that any Melvins song would nit be complete without Buzz Osborne's searing guitar lines and noisy solos. A raw piece of quasi-prog, the Bloated Pope is one of the songs that they use unorthodox playing in a catchy fashion that burrows itself into your brain. One of the heaviest songs in their catalog, its sure to appeal to the metal head friend that likes music with a thick bite.
