10 Awesome Rock Bands With One Terrible Album

9. Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth (1982)

Sonic Youth's unique form of noise-rock, puts them in the category of 'acquired taste'. They had a penchant for creating sounds outside the usual realms of enjoyment. Inspired by the avant-garde experimentation of groups like The Velvet Underground, but adopting the ferocity of acts like the MC5 - who's guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith, inspired the group's name - they engineered a sound of unique intrigue.

This was a group who took the DIY mentality of punk and post-punk and ran with it. They originally formed in New York, during the early '80s, with a line up cobbled together from a number of club acts. For a bunch of '80s creative-types living in the Big Apple, it's unsurprising they didn't have a huge amount of money. They were forced to use the cheapest instruments they could find. The low grade, tacky guitars already sounded like sh*t, motivating the group to mess around with alternative tunings.

This resulted in an assortment of noise, that although captivating wasn't all that enjoyable. Experimenting for the sake of it doesn't necessarily lead to a good sound... Although, their first record caught the eye of several labels, it's not one you can sit through for long.

The experience, is unique in the sense that it's far from pleasant, but you can recognise the very early hints of the sound that would push these guys to greatness.
