10 Awesome Rock Bands With One Terrible Album
2. Relaxer - Alt-J (2017)
So remember what I was saying about a band being hamstrung by their own brilliance? This is the ultimate example of that sentiment. This is a band who played with musical texture and subverted the idea of music in such a way as to reinvent the game.
Now, let's be clear, there are some great songs on this record, 3WW and Dead Crush, are both numbers as good as anything the band has ever written. But the true brilliance of alt-J - at least on their first two records - was their ability to perfectly structure an album around seemingly contradicting musical styles and textures.
An Awesome Wave, saw the fusing of traditional folk music; dubstep style drops, and indie guitar patterns- all interlaced with chorale melodies. Somehow they managed to tie in heavy folktronica beats, with tunes played on a child's recorder. It was a marvel. This Is All Yours, proved they weren't a one hit wonder, either. They expanded their sound by imbuing their songs with a triumphant cinematic resonance. Both of these records had an intrinsic cohesion to them.
Their third album, however, was a sloppy mixture of tracks - ranging, from great, to sub pair - all tied together with interludes of half-baked ideas. This all might sound overly harsh, but alt-J can do far better.
