10 Awesome Rock Bands With One Terrible Album
1. Squeeze - The Velvet Underground (1973)
This record really has no business barring the name The Velvet Underground. By this time, the driving creative forces of John Cale and Lou Reed, were off doing their own thing. Doug Yule was the last remaining member from the band's heyday, but rather than calling it quits, he attempted to pick up the reins himself.
Yule all but castrated the ballsy sound of the Underground. There was non of he avant-garde experimentation, and no risqué lyrics about sexuality, drug taking or New York's underbelly. Although, Loaded, had seen the band adopt a more poppy sound, the songs were well crafted and memorable. Squeeze, however, was a record of unimaginative drivel.
At best it serves to put you in a slightly better head space, after a particularly potent hangover... On the other hand, all the upbeat melodies and Beach Boy style backing vocals, become irritating fast.
If this record didn't have the audacity to attribute itself to The Velvet Underground, it might be better received. It is in essence a solo record. But the songs fade from memory almost as soon as they've ended. For an Underground album this is offensively inoffensive, lacking any of the challenging edge or charm of the band's earlier work.
