10 Awesome Rock Bands With Terrible Debut Albums
4. David Bowie - David Bowie
If you know anything about David Bowie's music, you know that his debut would sound absolutely nothing like his glory years. This was the guy who was used to reinventing himself on every single record he made, so why would his debut end up being any different? Even though David was able to pull off many different genres though, vaudeville was never really that great a fit for him.
Arriving around the same time that the Beatles were working on Sgt. Peppers, this really feels like Bowie was trying to grasp onto the chipper side of rock and roll. While the idea of Bowie making a theatrical rock album sounds amazing on paper, his lack of confidence in some of these songs is apparent from the moment he opens his mouth, sounding less like the Thin White Duke and more like an art college student presenting his first recital to the world.
Hell, at the worst of times, you have songs like Sell Me a Coat, with the music sounding so scrubbed clean that it feels like it's actively trying to do away with the dirty rock and roll that was going on around the same time. Almost to hit the reset button, Bowie eventually made his next album self titled, almost like he was refusing to acknowledge that this record even existed. And if the man himself has swore off this record, who are we to judge?
