10 Bad Debut Albums From Great Bands
8. From Genesis to Revelation - Genesis
Of all the prog bands of the 70's, Genesis always had an unbridled tenacity. Whether it was losing band members or getting pushback from their label, the band were able to survive lead singer changes and even managed to put prog on the pop charts with Phil Collins behind the mic.
While the band's first delve into progressive material came on Trespass, the band's real first outing is something the members would probably want to keep under wraps. Recorded while many of them were still in high school, the album has a sound that feels closer to baroque pop than prog epics. It makes total sense for the band to make something that sounds like Kate Bush, but the production of the record comes off more amateurish than intentionally raw.
Vocalist Peter Gabriel also sounds like he hasn't quite found his voice yet on this outing, with his trademark wail replaced with a lilting mix of breathy vocal passages and posh pop phrasing. Upon release, the album was met with widespread apathy from the record industry, leaving the band to make a big course correction on their later works. Most of the band consider this album a demo rather than a proper record, but this is the actual first steps of the prog rock giants before their gradual ascent.
