10 Bad Debut Albums From Great Bands
7. Pretties For You - Alice Cooper
Throughout his entire career, you can't really say anything Alice Cooper has done has been "normal." From his maniacal stage show to his off-the-wall song topics, the man (and band) were one of the most shocking acts ever to emerge during the birth of hard rock.
Once the band got into the studio for the first time, their experimental outings ended up biting them in the ass. Signed to Frank Zappa's label, the band's debut Pretties For You was an absolute commercial bomb, with most of the songs being too unhinged to be commercially viable. Aside from the spotty song construction, the actual production of the record is a bit lackluster, with most of it feeling too noisy to latch onto any coherent melodies.
There are some shining lights to be found here like "Reflected," which would later be reworked and retitled "Elected" for the band's later period masterpiece Billion Dollar Babies. Given the band's raucous stage behavior, it seems like they were trying to recapture the energy of their live shows but ended up making an album that was a mess rather than controlled chaos. Alice Cooper's loveability comes from his weirdness, but this was the one instance where he may have been too weird for his own good.
