10 Bafflingly Terrible Songs That Were Somehow Incredibly Successful

10. Soulja Boy Tell 'Em €“- Crank That (Soulja Boy)

These days, you'd be forgiven for not really remembering who Soulja Boy is. Like lightening he seemed to strike the music scene with almost immediate and intense popularity, but that popularity was tied far too closely to trendiness rather than talent, and the it didn't take long for the fad to completely fade.

Nevertheless when Soulja Boy was part of the music scene his songs were incredibly popular, none more so than Crank That (Soulja Boy). Released in 2007, Crank That served as the lead single from debut studio album souljaboytellem.com (not a terrible marketing strategy all things considered). Not only did Crank That spend seven weeks at number one on the U.S. Billboard chart, it also ranked as number twenty-one on Rolling Stone magazines best songs of 2007.

It's one thing for the song to have been commercially successful, it's another for it to have ranked by legitimate music publications. Even more bafflingly, the song was actually nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Song, eventually losing out to Kanye West. As of February 2014 the song has been downloaded more than five million times in the US.
