8. Franz Ferdinand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0bt3kqs8rE Franz Ferdinand are one of the most underrated bands in the planet. They flirted with hugeness and for a while seemed to be the band of choice to name drop by the great and good. They looked like a gang, wore the same clothes and in Alex Kapranos they had a louche, androgynous frontman who had a way with a killer lyric and could play mean guitar whilst looking as equally comfortable on the catwalk as he did with the band. When 'Take Me Out' erupted onto the scene, it announced a band that was equally as comfortable on the dance floor as they were in the pages of the NME. Brit and Mercury awards were duly scooped up, and their second album 'You could have had it so much better' showed a band who could master the funk of Chic with the archness of Brett Anderson on vocals. But after that, subsequent albums stalled, and they're now in that weird place of having been a trendsetter, but no longer a leader of the pack. This is a tremendous shame, because with the success of Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' and the reinvention of Pharrell Williams whose song 'Happy' will take some beating as song of the year, Franz Ferdinand and their love of the groove surely means that the time is ripe for them to be the natural Glastonbury headliner this year, instead of the worthy - but by comparison rather oafish - Kasabian, who give the people what they want, but not what they need. The answer? Get listening to the rightful heirs of guitar funk and hope that they start soaring again

What makes music fantastic? Star quality, amazing music, breathtaking lyrics and the ability to bring something new to the table, even if that means a new take on the classics. That's what I love to listen to and write about.
