10 Bands That Became One Album Wonders
9. The La's
College radio tends to be one of the most overlooked portions of the rock landscape. After all, without having these independent stations, there's a good chance that we would have never heard such amazing acts like the Pixies, R.E.M., or even the first few waves of punk when they were first starting to hit their stride. Though most of these artists went on to bigger and better things, the La's deserved a lot more longevity than what they eventually got.
Having a lot more of a rootsy rock bent to their sound, you can hear a lot of the old school flavor of rock and roll in almost every song on their debut, from the folk messing-about happening on Doledrum to the thick nasal whine coming through on songs like Liberty Ship. Though a lot of these songs get by on their charm alone, songs like There She Goes should have been hits if not for MTV shying away from the alternative nation for years.
By the time we eventually got ahold of the power of alt-rock with Nirvana, the La's were already firmly in the rearview, having broken up and made their separate ways just before the musical revolution officially got underway. As much fun as this album is, the fact that they were this close to becoming one of the biggest names in music makes it all the more frustrating.
