10 Bands That Became One Album Wonders
8. Cyndi Lauper
Pop as a genre has never been all that kind to the artists that have given them hits throughout the years. Unless you're name is Michael Jackson or Lady Gaga, there are only a handful of artists who have survived their glory years, having been chewed up by the fame machine and spit back out. Though many '80s acts managed to play the game fairy well, She's So Unusual saw Cyndi Lauper hitting her stride way too early.
That's not say that this album doesn't have its bright spots though. Across nearly every single track on here, the production and songwriting are nearly flawless, from the free spirited joy of Girls Just Want To Have Fun to the raw emotion behind something like Time After Time. As much as this record is flawless, it was only going to be downhill from here.
While Lauper's later period did have a few flirtations with the mainstream here and there, each record seemed to show diminishing returns before quickly dropping off the map. Even as recently as the past few years, Lauper has been making the grind as a working musician, away from the charts and working in everything from Broadway to even bluesy singing in her time. Though we're a long ways off from something like She Bop, Lauper at least has managed to stay in showbiz for all the right reasons.
