10 Bands That Ditched What Made Them Famous

8. Panic At The Disco

The 2000's were ripe with pop-punk bands, each turning their own form of melodrama into furious power chord thunder. Of all the bands on the more emo side of the spectrum, Panic! at the Disco were always the most theatrical, as they made more extravagant compositions all while clad in elaborate costumes that seemed to hearken back to the 20's.

With the band having established their footing, guitarist and songwriter Ryan Ross used the next album cycle as an opportunity to flex his songwriting muscles. What manifested was Pretty. Odd., whose folksy sound and classic rock pastiches made the album title certainly apt. While everyone was still banging their head to "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," the band was pumping out sugary ballads like "Northern Downpour."

Though most fans ate up this new style, others were very stand-offish, with many people calling the band a victim of the sophomore slump. In a desperate form of course correction, the band then fractured, leaving Brendon Urie to lead the band into their next era as they returned to a more pop-centric sound. Pretty. Odd. may have been a contentious record at its outset, but it remains an interesting snapshot of one of the greatest pop acts of the modern era.
