10 Bands That Ditched What Made Them Famous

5. Linkin Park

Nu metal had always been known to be a particularly angry genre. Each band always played loud and had an insistent sonic attack as they spewed their venom across a record. Linkin Park was no exception to this rule, with their debut Hybrid Theory and followup Meteora becoming essential listening for any angsty 2000's kid.

About halfway through the decade, the band had become restless in their traditional sound, which led to them switching up their styles completely. While the band started to focus on more electronic material on their release Minutes to Midnight, it wasn't until A Thousand Suns dropped that fans were greeted with what seemed like a complete artistic 180.

Even though Linkin Park had always had a present ambience to their sound courtesy of DJ Joe Hahn, the lack of guitar crunch in the band's songs led many fans to jump ship. Unfettered by any backlash, the band's releases rode the wave between heaviness and electronic until the untimely death of Chester Bennington in 2017. Though the band's evolution was far removed from their more angsty beginnings, much of the band's later output is still well worth sifting through if you don't mind a little synth mixed in with stomping riffs.
