10 Bands That Ended Their Careers On A High Note

2. Blackstar - David Bowie

Most fans of David Bowie were kept in the dark about what the Starman was going through around the turn of the 2010's. Although the Next Day may have been a great return to form, no one could have imagined that Bowie's time with us was limited, having been diagnosed with cancer that was slowly killing him from the inside out. Any other person would have been focused on making every day count, but Bowie wanted to leave with the most artistic statement he could.

Getting to work on his next album, Blackstar is Bowie grappling with the idea of death, whether that be his legacy on songs like the title track and Lazarus to making sure that some things stay private on I Can't Give Everything Away. For any casual fan, this is a fairly heavy listen, as Bowie knows that he's going to have to face his mortality and trying to use his muse to carry him to the other side. Though this does stand as an epitaph of sorts, you don't walk away from this album seeing a man that's scared of dying.

For most of the tracks on here, Bowie is looking death square in the face and is content with passing away, knowing that he has left behind the legacy that he wanted and trying to make peace with his fans in the process. And what better way to say goodbye than with an album? The Starman could have been doing anything he wanted to, and for some reason he chose us to give his fond farewell to in the end.
