10 Bands That Fell Out Over One Song

6. Bring It On Down - Oasis

The entire recording process going into Definitely Maybe turned into absolute hell. Although the Gallagher Brothers liked to brag about themselves being part of the biggest band in the world, they had little to show for it in the beginning, with every pass they made in the studio sounding weak compared to what they did live. It also doesn’t help when you have a drummer who can’t keep in time that well.

When the band were cutting the beginning of their punky thrasher Bring It On Down, drummer Tony McCarroll kept screwing up the main drum part that opens the song, always speeding up or leaving some hits out trying to keep up with everything. While the band had started working on a pretty good take, Noel Gallagher was not going to wait until Tony got himself together, getting a session drummer to come in to play the beat correctly.

When the session drummer started to have some problems though, Tony exploded in a fit of anger and ended up nailing the drum take in just a few takes. While Tony might have been vindicated that particular time, the writing was on the wall that he was going to leave when the next album rolled around. The punky thrash of McCarroll was what the band needed for their debut, but there was no way he was going to be able to pull off songs like Champagne Supernova and Don’t Look Back in Anger with the same setup.
