10 Bands That Made The Same Song Twice
2. Welcome to Paradise - Green Day
It was a pretty tough gamble for Green Day to switch over to the major labels during the mid '90s. They were quickly outgrowing their indie label Lookout, but signing on with big business was enough for them to become sellouts throughout their old punk community. While they eventually relented with Dookie, the new version of Welcome to Paradise made the original feel like amateur hour.
That's not to dismiss Billie Joe Armstrong's strengths as a songwriter either. On the version you hear on Kerplunk, you can tell that the band were still trying to figure stuff out in the studio, as Tre Cool flies off the rails on the drums and is struggling to really find his place with the band. And while the performance is still great, the Dookie version's brilliance really comes from what they do with that melodic bridge.
On the Kerplunk version, you can feel the same intensity, but everything seems so muted that you don't really feel as much release when you get back to the verses. As soon as Mike Dirnt's bassline begins on Dookie though, you can tell that things are about to jump up a notch, as producer Rob Cavallo creates this amazing barrage of noise around your speakers before hitting you with the final part of the song. Kerplunk was still a band trying to work out the bugs of what they could do. By the time they made it to Dookie, they were seasoned veterans who gave you a musical journey into the underworld.
