10 Bands That Made The Same Song Twice
1. Candle In the Wind - Elton John
The entire mindset behind Candle in the Wind had always been geared towards the fleeting nature of stardom. As much as it might seem alluring from the outside looking in, Bernie Taupin's lyrics were paying tribute to all of those stars that pass away in the prime of their life, whether that be Marilyn Monroe or any rock and roll casualty. Once the song became a modern standard in pop music though, Elton used the opportunity to make the song suited for royalty.
In the wake of the tragic death of Princess Diana, Elton took to making a new version of the song paying tribute to her memory. Being a friend of Diana's years before she passed, this was exactly the kind of song that most of the country needed to hear in the wake of her passing, bidding a fond farewell to England's Rose. Even though there was nothing that changed about the melody, hearing Elton play this on the new version is a much more sophisticated affair, almost like it was written in a church hall somewhere.
And while the original was a hit in its own right when it was released on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, it seemed to take on a whole new life after this version hit the airwaves, being a solemn ode to those that pass away too soon. With the song now reaching classic status on both versions, Candle in the Wind feels like the perfect example of "gone but not forgotten" in music history.
