10 Bands That Mixed Different Music Genres

1. David Bowie

When David Bowie was first emerging on the British music scene, the rock world was already in its own state of change. From the British Invasion onward, the rock scene was going in different directions to see what worked, from the sounds of psychedelia to getting knee deep in the blues with bands like Cream. There was a lot more to choose from, and Bowie was looking to do a little bit of everything throughout his career.

Starting from the sounds of Space Oddity, Bowie had his eye on something new with every single project, going heavy on the Man Who Sold the World to becoming one of the kings of the glam rock movement in the early '70s, coming up with characters like Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. After playing rock and roll theater half the time, Bowie's music took a sharp shift in the mid '70s, from his Berlin trilogy getting in tune with kraut rock and post rock to the dawn of the '80s where he rebranded himself as a pop star on albums like Let's Dance and Never Let Me Down.

Up until his last album, Bowie was still not willing to go with the program, whether indulging in one off passion projects like Young Americans' soul influences or the drum and bass sounds of Earthling until eventually ending up in the world of jazz for his final album Blackstar. Any of these genres would have been enough to launch any musician to superstardom, but that's not what Bowie was looking for. You only get one shot to do something like this, so you might as well get the most out of your music that you can.
