10 Bands That Never Topped Their 1st Album
8. The Knack
If you're willing to swallow the opinions of critics who only listen to prog rock, then you have probably already dismissed The Knack as the worst band to ever exist.
Those who listened to their debut, Get The Knack, past the omnipresent My Sharona, found one of the most thrilling debuts from an American band since their British idols The Beatles made their world-changing appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
The Los Angeles band were a big hit among the young girls who hadn't yet gotten over the novelty of showing their shiny new IDs at the Sunset Strip clubs where the band was known to play their energetic live sets. The grouchy scribes old enough to know the band copped their skinny ties and giddy choruses from The Fab Four weren't having it, though.
They wanted their interviews and the band had a strange policy of not giving them, quickly turning the music press against them. It was reportedly their manager's attempt at building mystique for the group, but it backfired dramatically and led to a semi-organised campaign against the band known by their slogan Nuke The Knack.
Despite the backlash, the album sold well over a million copies and went to number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, but with it they closed that door for any other power pop band that came after them.
Their second album was good musically, but a clear and cynical rewrite of the first, and the response was even more sour. Frontman Doug Fieger also doubled down on his dodgy lyrics aimed at women and they weren't helped by producer Mike Chapman stating in the liner notes that the record was very dear to him... and his bank manager.
