10 Bands That Only Have One Key Member

1. Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters

After Nirvana imploded with Kurt Cobain's tragic suicide, it would be completely understandable for any of his bandmates to run as far away from music as they possibly could. And that's exactly what Dave Grohl thought at the time as well, wanting to never even touch a drumset again and looking to hide away to try and make sense of what his life was about at this point. Everyone has to pick up the pieces and move on, but Foo Fighters didn't even start as a band in the truest sense.

Looking to just knock out a couple of songs that he had written during his Nirvana days, the first Foo Fighters record was just Dave playing every instrument by himself as a form of catharsis to move out of Nirvana's shadows. Once people started to pick up on what Dave was doing though, he turned down the offer to be Tom Petty's drummer to forge his own path, bringing in Nate Mendel from Sunny Day Real Estate and Pat Smear from the Germs in the first incarnation of the band.

Up until now, musicians like Taylor Hawkins and Chris Shiftlett have turned the Foos into a rock and roll institution, going from the post grunge sounds of their early days to the straight up stadium rock and roll present on albums like In Your Honor and Echoes Silence Patience and Grace. Nirvana may have been etched in stone before the Foos started, but a song like The Pretender was proof enough that Dave could make it on his own.
