10 Bands That Ripped Off Themselves
9. Bad Guy - Eminem
Every hip hop fan remembers where they were the first time they heard Stan by Eminem. In just a few short minutes, Slim Shady was able to write a detailed description of how far fan obsession can push someone, with the titular character going over the edge and killing his young girlfriend and himself to impress his idol. While many fans would have killed to have the songwriting caliber of this stature come back to Em, no one was really expecting something like Bad Guy.
Appearing fittingly on the second Marshall Mathers LP, this next delve into fan obsession actually picks up right where the original Stan left off. As opposed to having to deal with a completely different persona, the new character in this one is Matthew, the little brother of the original Stan mentioned all the way back in 2001, who has come back to do justice to the man who cost his brother his life.
Something like this would usually come off as a cheap way for an artist to get back in touch with their roots (which it is), but the horror style of vocals feels much more raw now that Em has gotten older, as he's being thrown into the situation again after not receiving closure from the first one. In lesser hands, this would have been pandering to the lowest kind of fan, but to have something this triumphant in the later part of your career was enough to leave die hard Slim fans cheering in their seats.
