10 Bands That Were Haunted While Recording
5. Vol. III - Slipknot
There's almost a straight ahead split in the career trajectory of Slipknot when they made Vol. III. Now with two of the heaviest records under their belt, the band didn't think they should try to top what they had already done, moving in a different direction and coming through with some of the most commercially friendly music that they had made up until that point. It may have been a great success, but it also came from some pretty spooky experiences at the Houdini mansion.
Being a mainstay of producer Rick Rubin, this house was never inhabited by the great magician, but it does carry some spooky elements that no one has been able to quite pin down. During the recording, Chris Fehn had talked about different areas of the house that would get a little bit of control, from doors shutting randomly to lights flickering on and off for no reason. It also came as a shock to Corey Taylor, who made mention of seeing a ghostly figure in the bathroom as he was about to go out for the night.
While many people would have probably wanted to get as far away from this place as possible after recording wrapped, the band has had some fond memories of coming to work there, saying that it helped them get closer and become a lot more honest about where they felt the band should be going. Although the Knot definitely came through, this wouldn't be the last time that the Houdini mansion worked its magic on rock bands.
