10 Bands Who Were Justified In Changing Sounds

7. The Cure

Having been formed all the way back in 1978, The Cure have become one of the most influential and recognisable gothic rock bands in the world. With his wild hair and red lipstick, frontman Robert Smith has evolved so much as an artist and taken the band through countless different styles and genres, all to great success it should be said.

The Cure were formed in the midst of the post-punk movement that was sweeping across the UK in the late 1970s. The gloomy, dreary sounding notes and tones were synonymous of the time and immediately established the group as one of the leading lights in the anti-establishment scene.

However, from the early 1980s onwards, the band became a lot more commercially mainstream and their audience began to grow more and more. From the middle of the decade in particular, upbeat, glossy songs such as Close To Me, Just Like Heaven, Inbetween Days and Friday I'm In Love were released and were instant hits.

Having been going for over forty years now, adapting and evolving is the key reason behind The Cure's longevity. It's also led to a hugely successful career, with the band scooping up a place in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for their 13 studio albums and 30 or so single releases.
