Okay, I cheated a little, but we have to face the facts here. There hasn't been a band to really make an impact in the rock music realm since Nirvana's trailblazing three years in the mainstream conscious starting in 1991. There have been plenty of great acts to come out since then, but now that rock music is sort of in mainstream hibernation, indie synth-pop acts and the like have replaced them on rock radio. Where we used to have Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, we now have Imagine Dragons and Capital Cities. Not that those are bad acts necessarily, but I think we should all agree that they're on the pop side of the musical spectrum, yet everyone considers them "rock acts". While everyone is really looking forward to new records from Tool and Foo Fighters, what we really need is a young band to remind the masses what rock music is, and should be. Theoretically, they could draw influence from musical acts of eras past, yet put their own unique stamp on it. After all, the grunge revolution of 1991 owed a lot to bands like Black Sabbath, The Beatles, The Doors, The Who, and The Stooges. A reason why guitar rock is in a bad place right now in regards to mainstream exposure is because not enough young bands are writing big enough songs with hooks. Bands really do need some pop sensibilities in their songwriting; Kurt Cobain almost prided his whole career on his pop songwriting skills. The right median between what "rock" and "pop" is needs to be rediscovered. Rock music is cyclical in nature, and though I'd probably bet my money on Dead Sara being a trailblazer for new rock bands, like the stock market its really impossible to predict. No one saw Nirvana coming out of nowhere in 1991 that's for sure. Who are you guys looking forward to? And do you have any other amazing bands that seem to be gaining momentum the rest of us need to check out?
