At a time when people were sick of listening to genres like disco on the radio, these guys broke through with At Budokan by taking pop songs and making them nasty. While most harder rock fans stayed for the guitar riffs, it didn’t get much poppier than “Surrender,” which quickly became the perfect teenage anthem.

Though the song may not have meant much beyond staying true to yourself, all of the magic behind the band comes in their interplay, which is very much indebted to the Beatles’ model.
