10 Beatles Songs Not Written By The Beatles
4. Next Year - Foo Fighters
Foo Fighters was one of the reasons we were able to move on after 1994. While most of the grunge rock devotees were still lamenting the loss of Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl struck out on his own with the Foo Fighters and made rock music seem fun and exciting again. Kurt Cobain may have been a self-professed Beatles fan during grunge’s tenure, but it seems like that magic rubbed off on Grohl when it came time to record There is Nothing Left To Lose.
As the band’s only album as a trio, this record is all over the map, from heavy metal ragers to some of the greatest singles of the band’s career. Though people would probably single out “Learn to Fly” as the greatest song on here, “Next Year” is one of the most gorgeous sounding moments in the Foos’ catalog, with a chorus that feels like it's lifted straight out of 1965.
The song may just be a few chords, but the way that Grohl sings makes you feel like you’re floating above the Earth, watching the beauty below. Thanks to added extensions like the Mellotron and organ, this whole song feels like a throwback to a simpler tune just before rock got its edge.
