10 Beatles Songs Not Written By The Beatles
3. Northern Downpour - Panic at the Disco
It would have been easy for many rock fans to write Panic at the Disco off as just a group of guys feeding off of the ‘scene rock’ label. The band’s goofy outfits along with their pretentious song titles made them prime candidates for a flash in the pan career, but there was always something a bit more to this theatrical rock act.
Moving on from their debut, Pretty Odd was aptly titled to say the least, with a sound that abandoned their emo pop stylings for more folksy instrumentation inspired by the ‘60s. Though they may have been laying the Beatles worship on pretty thick at this time, “Northern Downpour” was the closest the band came to perfecting that aesthetic. With a barebones acoustic instrumentation, the entire song blossoms out into a beautiful depiction of sound, which is not too dissimilar than some of Paul McCartney’s ballads like “The Long and Winding Road.”
For a band that was all about capturing the hearts of their teenage fanbase, this was a risk that not only gave them some hits, but also brought that shiny pop rock sound back onto the rock charts. Pretty Odd may be looked at as a bit of a sore spot for Panic fans, but this song is definitely something worth revisiting time and time again.
