10 Best 1990s Alt-Rock Albums You Need To Hear
6. Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar (1996)
Marilyn Manson was, is and always will be a freak of nature, and Antichrist Superstar is his volatile thrash back against a post-Nirvana world.
Industrial, violent and freakish (like devil worship to the max), Antichrist Superstar found a way to make aggressive metal mainstream and catchy. Like the title of its opening track Irresponsible Hate Anthem, this album made every parent's worst nightmare a reality and soaked evil into the minds of the youth.
Equally sinister to Marilyn Manson’s music are the musicians that make it up; the five-piece of Manson, Daisy Berkowitz, Twiggy Ramirez, Madonna Wayne Gacy and Ginger Fish were (and still are terrifying). Taking their names from a combination of pop culture icons and serial killers, they sum up everything about the Marilyn Manson ethos. They’re the boys next door, plotting evil in their basement.
Manson himself might be the Antichrist Superstar, but the record summarises his evil. From the synths, to the rallying chants, to the growls, everything on this album is twisted and antagonistic. It’s an anthem for evil.
