3. Vermilion Pt. 2 - Slipknot
It gets a bit contentious talking about Vol. III: the Subliminal Verses amongst Slipknot fans. While many fans see it as a great bridge between different genres of heavy music, some of the original Maggots felt betrayed by the softer direction that happened across the track listing. However, slowing a song down doesn't mean that the band had lost their edge.
Coming towards the middle of the record, the Vermilion songs tap into something much more disturbing for Slipknot, as Corey Taylor takes on the persona of a man who falls in love with someone who isn't even real. This kind of neurotic behavior works great in Pt. 1, and yet it's the slowed down versions that ends up making your blood curdle that much more.
Instead of having this man having his mental state break down before your eyes like on the first entry, Vermilion Pt. 2 is the sound of that same man completely devoid of his sanity, trying to pick up the pieces of his shattered mind.
Though this is definitely not a song to mosh to, what it lacks in punchiness it makes up for with some of the darkest lyrics Taylor has ever put down on record. Yeah, it's not as heavy as some of their other stuff, but sometimes a song doesn't need to sound scary to make you feel uneasy.
