10 Best Album Finales In Rock History
4. Rock N Roll Suicide - David Bowie
There has never been an artist who has shaped the rock scene quite like David Bowie. Wearing each of his influences like costumes, you can practically contextualize the trailblazing moments in the Thin White Duke's career based on specific albums in his discography. Though compared to the flirtations with soul, dance music, and post-rock, the real chameleon effect really starts at Ziggy Stardust.
Being one of the more adventurous concepts of the time, this entire record has been about the life and times of an alien rock star of Bowie's own creation up until this point, as he wears his persona close to his chest. However, things take a bit of a darker turn when the band the Spiders from Mars have to be broken up just before the grand finale. As we reach the lone guitar that starts off Rock and Roll Suicide, we see Ziggy in the spotlight for what very well may be the final time.
Throughout his career, Bowie still never delivered a vocal performance like this, especially when he reaches the final part of the track as he screams "Oh love, you're not alone." For as strange an idea as this was at its inception, this is what happens when you take the foundations of rock and roll and turn them inside out. Ziggy might not have been able to save the planet from its five year destruction, but if this is still left in the rubble, it certainly wasn't a lost cause.
