10 Best Album Finales In Rock History

3. Something in the Way - Nirvana

Not many other albums have changed the entire musical landscape quite like Nirvana did on Nevermind. Though the tracks were already killer before anyone had ever heard them, the 12 tunes on display here announced the new regime of alternative rock that was about to take over the mainstream. While the album may have opened with a shot of life on Smells Like Teen Spirit, Something in the Way is where we see the subtle beauty creep back in.

Written on a cheap 5-string guitar that Kurt Cobain was fooling around with, this song subtly creeps in, as we hear the dark tale of a protagonist who's homeless living under a bridge and feeding off the scraps of fish he can find in the river. Not necessarily the most relatable of topics, but all of the angst and pain that Nirvana is all about is captured in that single line of the title.

No matter what kind of pain you have going on in your life, any adolescent tends to feel like there's something in the way that's distracting them from being who they want to be. The instrumentation is also perfect, as Dave Grohl pulls back on the drums just enough to give the melody room to breathe. While it's a shame that the pain Kurt talks about in this song was never rectified, the rock community is forever grateful that he wrote this song so others could get through their own pain.
