10 Best Albums Still To Come In 2013

6. MGMT - MGMT

MGMT; Andrew VanWyngarden (left); photo by Jennifer Tzar As you may expect from such an individual psychedelic rock band as MGMT, their upcoming, self-titled album is actually a very modern and digital innovation, with an joint aural and optical listening experience through "The Optimizer". With video and CGI work as part of an enhanced album package, this could either be incredibly interesting and innovative, or an over the top flop. Released in April, Alien Days is the only proper taster we've had of the album so far (although there are plenty of live versions of Your Life Is A Lie on YouTube), and even though it features an eccentrically synthetic and high-pitched introduction, it soon morphs into a more straightforward genre piece about society. It features all the basic components that brought MGMT to the fore in the first place, but it is neither as catchy as Time To Pretend or as interesting lyrically as Kids. However, that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot of potential here; it's worth checking out for its experimental format alone. http://youtu.be/uG2Pgd6Tm7Q Release date: 17 September
